"Peer Gynt," a masterpiece orchestral suite composed by Norwegian Edvard
Grieg, will be performed on Saturday by Norway-born conductor Terje
Mikkelsen and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

"Peer Gynt" was composed as incidental music for Henryk Ibsen's very long
and arduous play about a Norwegian anti-hero, Peer Gynt. Ibsen composed a
score of about 90 minutes as incidental music: It had an ineffable
quality that destined it to become a classic. It acquired a life of its
own. Grieg extracted two suites of four pieces each from the incidental
music, which became very popular as concert music today.

The Shanghai concert will be a show of the incidental music as well as
songs, dance and performance.

Mikkelsen has been tutored by maestro Mariss Jansons and the music
director of Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra.

Famous for melodies capturing the folk ethos of Scandinavia, Grieg was a
pianist, conductor, chamber music composer, critic and an expert on
Norwegian music.

Based on Norwegian folk melodies, Grieg's music was strongly linked to
the landscapes and traditional Norwegian way of life. His "Piano Concerto
in A Minor," for example, has become almost synonymous with Norway.

Though patterned to some extent on European models, Grieg combined them
with elements of Norwegian folk music and his personal conceptions of
Norwegian nature and the Norwegian character.

Grieg was skilled at creating short, quiet and handsome music, which was
extremely popular during his lifetime.

Like Grieg, another composer of his time, Antonin Dvorak, is famous for
writing melodies capturing the folk ethos of his Czech homeland.

There will be an opportunity in September to listen to Dvorak's
"Slawische Dance" played by the Berliner Symphoniker, which will also
play Beethoven's "Symphony No. 3 Hero" and Brahms' "Hungarian Dances" on
September 14 at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.
