Hot to trot

Updated: 2007-09-14 15:42

Straight from the heart of Latin dance, Colombia's star troupe Delirio
comes to town to inject some fire into Beijing's lively salsa scene.
Already, salsa, with its social vibe and sexy moves, is finding a strong
following in the capital.

And for amateur salsa fans looking for new moves to show off at Beijing's
handful of dedicated clubs, Delirio is sure to light up the floor.

This weekend, the troupe will put on what is touted as the "hottest and
purest performance offered by the Latin world". But it's not just dance.
Delirio's performance blends exotic, vigorous dancing with exciting music
and spectacular acrobatics. Fourteen orchestra musicians back Delirio's
60 dancers and 15 acrobats, a combination that has seen the group winning
salsa world champions many times.

Sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in Beijing, it will
be Delirio's first visit to China.

Salsa is one of the most popular dance forms in Beijing. There are
several dedicated Latin dance schools, and clubs such as Salsa Caribe and
Latino's are known for their atmosphere. Both clubs offer lessons, with
themed dance nights featuring live music. Even for those who don't take
it to the clubs, salsa has emerged as a vigorous, exotic and fashionable
sport - and a good way to meet people.

The dance arrived first in Japan and Korea around 2000, before hitting
China in 2002. Almost immediately, it became the fashionable pastime for
the young and hip in Beijing and Shanghai, and has maintained its base
despite the rise of new dance trends such as belly-dancing.

According to Liu Zimeng, general manager of the Bailando Dancing Club,
anyone can salsa, regardless of age, physical status or agility. Liu said
that the dance's ease of mastery could be one of the reasons behind
salsa's worldwide popularity.

Salsa is a fun way to exercise, for fitness, weight reduction or muscle
gain. As you learn more moves, practice boosts your physical endurance
and range of motion. It is an ideal way to strengthen the cardiovascular
system, and it contributes to a good posture and body alignment. It
increases flexibility and stamina, and encourages a total body stretch.

Besides the physical benefits, through salsa you will meet friendly,
fun-loving people who share your enthusiasm for this romantic and
passionate dance.

"It is precisely the magic of salsa that Chinese people may fail to
immediately adapt to this tropical and sexy dance, because of the
cultural conflict, but changes begin to emerge both physically and
mentally after two or three classes." Liu says.

Delirio Colombian Salsa Night is coming to Beijing on 7:30 pm, September
14 at Beijing Exhibition Center Theatre. Tel: 6532-3377
