Simple pleasure

(That's Shanghai)
Updated: 2007-09-13 10:14

Maybe we are getting old. But more and more, we most treasure life's
simple pleasures-a cold drink, a warm bartender and music that enhances
the mood without drowning out the conversation.

On each front, Mokkos Bar exceeds our every expectation. This is a true
Japanese shochu bar; the owners, a husband and wife team from Kumamoto,
were genuinely friendly, and our fellow patrons were gracious, if a bit
reserved. The drink menu has yet to be translated into English, so we
instead chose the house recommendation, a rice shochu over ice (RMB 35)
and a grapefruit chuhai (shochu cocktail, RMB 25).

Both were well advised. The tiny but immaculate interior lends a degree
of intimacy, and the off-the-beaten-path location and humble exterior
make Mokkos an ultra-cool home away from home for those in the know.
