I don't think they mean Fengshui, just water and wind.

Er, Why?

Given the fashionability of fengshui in the west, if I were to see a necklace (or anything else)
with these two characters (and only these two characters), I would bet heavy money on there being
a fengshui connection.

Bit that would mean she can only wear the necklace when standing in certain places. It would be
"bad" fengshui for her to stand in a doorway, for example.

1: Miss, I need you to stand over there, please.

2: No! I can't, because of my necklace!

I'd prefer:

Janine.... deadly chick

but that might be a little transliteration too far...

in_lab -

This sounds like a prompt for a creative writing assignment. Explain why this woman has a tattoo
that reads
Janine
Dudley
Chicken.

xsfer -

Its actually a guy

roddy -

Look, why don't you just tell us what it's meant to say, and then we can try and figure out why on
earth you've got the word 'Chicken' on your arm . . .

xsfer -

The individual concerned wouldn't say what it meant, hence me posting it here!

in_lab -

And if it doesn't mean what it was supposed to mean, maybe someone could figure out a way to fix
it. For example by adding a 田, you could turn the chicken into a frog (田雞). Well, maybe not,
but I'm sure other people would have better ideas.

雅各 -

From memory (so I could be wrong):

The former means chaos, including chaos of the mind. The second means wonton, as in wonton soup.
There are other terms for wonton, depending on where you are in China or elsewhere.

See especially: 云吞 - southern term for wonton. Wenlin also lists one of the meanings of 抄手
wonton soup. But no Chinese person has ever confirmed the latter to me.

雅各

skylee -

抄手 is also used in Sichuan to mean the food wonton.

As to 混沌, take a look -> http://cdict.giga.net.tw/?q=%B2V%A8P

jukebox -

The pronunciations are also different.
混沌 - hun4dun4
馄饨 - hun2tun

ameliasj -

You eat 馄饨.
And in some Chinese version of Bible, it says before God create everything, the world is
混沌(世界混沌一片).

So they are completely different.

aline -

thanks for clearing that up! I got confused after seeing many Chinese people write 混沌 instead
of 馄饨 during my online search for the different ways of wrapping the wontons.

Tom.King -

Are you flirting with me you can say 你是在捉弄我吗?

skylee -

Indeed, how? Strangely what comes to my mind is this from the Book of Odes -

Quote:

月出皎兮、佼人僚兮。
The moon comes forth in her brightness ; How lovely is that beautiful lady !

I figure it's because of the similarity of 僚 and 撩. haha.

doumeizhen -

If your conversations keep progressing, the book Making out in Chinese has a section of useful
phrases and terms.

I don't have one here or else I'd check the flirting thing for you.

roddy -

If she's got to ask, surely you aren't doing it right . . .

调情 would be the dictionary definition. I'm sure I once knew a much more colloquial expression,
but I can't find it - might have been 挤眉弄眼, which I don't think is quite appropriate but
deserves a mention for being a fantastic phrase anyway.

I had a copy of Making out in Chinese once, I seem to remember it being quite promising, but the
author (based in Taiwan I think) had decided to invent his own romanization scheme, thus making
life a little more difficult.

skylee -

Quote:

interesting. never thought that flirt = 捉弄. always think that flirt = 調情 ...

semantic nuance -

flirt with sb might be similar to 打情罵俏.
More slangy, if she asks that, the chinese version might be : 你想把我啊?
your answer 'yes, i'm flirting with you.' might be ' 對, 我就是要把你!'

把 here is a slang, meaning 'pick up sb'. From your context, that's what I could think of in
Taiwanese slang.

Hope it helps!

Obviously, after watching lots of western movies in which a man always nails a woman down.....

Yes. It's a big bag of rubbish. Despite the 汉办 endorsement on the cover, it's got a healthy
sprinkling of errors and the CDs are done direct from tape so there's little quality advantage -
you can even hear the distortion when the tape player speed goes wrong here and there.

I bought some of this course once because of the CDs, but to be honest it wasn't worth it.

on stereo types and the overall effect you think chinese americans have had on visual
entertainment(actors, directors, producers, not technology wise). Anyone intrested? my email is

kaox0018 -

i'm chinese american and i'm also a sociologist graduate. i dont have a lot of time but i might be
able to help your research a little. what are your research questions?

shobson1 -

Hello Kaox!

I don't necessarly have specific research questions, it's more of doing a cultural study on a
particular ethnic group. Since this is a group project, I'm doing chinese-americans in visual
media/entertainment. However, In the individual essay I must complete I must adhere to these
following questions:

1. Show relationship of the topic to the values of the ethnic group.
2. Show how tradition has been affected by the interaction of the dominant and subordinate
cultures in the United States.
3. Show relationship of the topic to the current issues.

I've only started on the introduction(which i'll later revise) and I've got a video, and about 7
books from the libary. APA format is the requirement, and though only 4 pages double spaced is
required, I want to do more because I respect and was once very very intrested in Asian American
culture through Anime. But I can't incorporate that genre really because thats of Japanese Origin.
However, there are ten extra credit points in me doing an interview, online or offline. So if you
can just give your opinion on the following questions concerning entertainmentt(or your view
period, I can just quote whatever is relevent, dosen't neccessarly have to answer questions).

1. How do you feel the Chinese American is represented in Mordern American Media(eg: Hollywood,
Broadway, Tv Shows etc)

2. How do you feel that the Chinese American culture has changed American media culture?

3. Are there any stereo types in American media that you think the Chinese American will
overcome(for lack of a better word) if given the oppertunity?

4. How do you feel America looks at the Chinese-American actor in General?

5.What genre do you think Chinese Americans will be able to really excel in and break the
inequality(if there is?) barrier?

6. What are your feelings on the stereo type of karate on Chinese Americans in Visual Media?

All these questions are voluntary. You don't have to answer any ones you deem offensive or
ignorent. Please do forgive me of any ignorence I have shown so far Feel free to revise any
questions you think could be better, and add any information you want that you think could help
the topic or benefit the Chinese American community as a whole represented

Thanks again for reading.

P.S. How do you like sociology? I'm taking SOC 101 and its my favorite class, I might go into that
field if it remains as intresting as it currently is

gato -

You should probably should include all East Asian Americans (i.e. Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and
probably Vietnamese) in your research since as far as American mass media and much of the public
are concerned, they are all treated as one. If there's a stereotype about one group (say
Japanese), it'll reflect off on the rest.

shobson1 -

Thanks for the reply Gato

I would love to include all East Asian Americans, a much broader field and I could make mass
paragraphs concerning the World War II Anti-Japanese commericals and cartoons.
But my assignment is on the specific cultural group-Chinese Americans My professors fault no doubt.

btw Whoseover is intrested and does do the interview, please include your real name that I may
cite it in my refrences. Thanks

geraldc -

Quote:

6. What are your feelings on the stereo type of karate on Chinese Americans in Visual Media?

Shouldn't that be a Kung fu stereotype?

shobson1 -

Thankyou for your reply geraldc.

I am still researching the subject(only got a week left) and I haven't yet researched rather kung
fu or karate has it's origins with Chinese- Americans. Please forgive me if I have it wrong.

mind_wander -

Shobson1,
I am an Asian-American residing in America, I might able to answer some of the questions listed to
get your started.

1. How do you feel the Chinese American is represented in Mordern American Media(eg: Hollywood,
Broadway, Tv Shows etc)
For me, there isn't to many Chinese Americans represening the modern American Media only a few. It
depends on what geographic area in the US, it willing to show more toward Chinese-American
audience like San Fransico and NYC.

3. Are there any stereo types in American media that you think the Chinese American will
overcome(for lack of a better word) if given the oppertunity?
This is a very good question, because there are stereotypes about Asians, if they are only one in
class would get straight A's in class. This is considered unfair to all the Asian-Americans who
are an average students just because they just are American's after all. I do get the stereotype
when I come into class as the Asian just came from China. Although it is stressful to repeat over
again that I am not from China, I was born here in the US, as a result in no comment.
The stereotype of the American Media claiming all Asian get straight A's is not necessary true. I
also felt very bad when people think this still, ineffect I get back-lashed because I am not an A
student, but an average student. Hey, I am just an Asian-American, it isn't might fault that I am
an American or is it?

6. What are your feelings on the stereo type of karate on Chinese Americans in Visual Media?
It is alittle annoying because of the American media's ignorances that every Asian will karate
chop you, if you asked them a question, comments, etc with a karate accent. This is not considered
all true, in my own opinion, most Asian-Americans are just like you and me, going on their
everyday lives.
Kung-fu movies is just a nice thing to start off topics, plus not all the best chinese tv series
are shown in the U.S. For example, Jin Yong famous works are highly popular in Asia and all over
the world. Some popular stories like Heavenly Dragon and the Eigthfold path, Legend of the condor
hereoes, Return of the condor heroes, Heavenly sword and the Dragon saber, and the Divinity of the
state.

P.S. I hope this helps you with your research.

Samuel C.

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Saviors of the planet are lost in translation

By Ji Kou (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-06 14:20

The reason why many of our countrymen consider environmental protection
to be some idealistic thing divorced from reality is partly because some
of our environmentalists are idealistic, bossy, unapproachable and
self-centered.

This disappointing realization comes from my own experiences of trying to
get along with a few of them.

One is a lady whom I met several years ago in a shabby classroom on a
remote county in the Tibet Autonomous Region. She was making a passionate
speech about her experience at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development held in Johannesburg, how important grassroots democracy is
to our environment and how humans should revere Mother Nature.

When she asked if there were "any questions" she received no response.
Her listeners - most of whom were non-Mandarin-speaking Tibetan villagers
- wore blank expressions. Even though an interpreter tried hard to
translate the names of all discussed foreign countries and cities, and
her trendy environmental jargon into Tibetan, I guessed that they just
didn't get it.

Later, I was told her nickname: "Sentimental Environmentalist".

Another guy is a project manager of a conservation organization who
happens to be a vegetarian. In a nature reserve in northern Inner
Mongolia, we shared the same table with a few Mongolian rangers.

It's OK for me to have more vegetables than meat and listen to this guy
promoting his healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle. To our
mutton-loving hosts, however, his vegetarian lifestyle seemed a little
strange. They ate almost nothing and said nothing. The lunch was one of
the most awkward I have ever had.

He was there to launch a project to persuade the locals to give up their
long-time practice of hunting wildlife for their meat. I don't think that
he could make it promoting his vegetarian lifestyle everywhere.

Last comes the guy I liked least. I met him during a trip to Sichuan.
Knowing that I'm a bird-watching newbie, the environmental writer said he
shared the same hobby. He started bird watching three years ago, which
was two years earlier than I'd taken up the leisurely pursuit.

In a country with less than 5,000 birdwatchers, happening across such a
fellow during a trip was certainly a surprising delight.

But all was not as it seemed. When I asked him if he had any special bird
he sought in particular, his answer was "any bird beautiful". And his
copy of the birdwatching guidebook looked brand-new in his hands - as did
his binoculars.

In our circle, this is called a "dude" - a novice birdwatcher or
non-birdwatcher.

I got further proof during last year's bird watching race held in Hubei
Province. He was the only one dressed in a red jacket. Like a bullfighter
with a piece of red cloth, he startled the birds from the distance.
Naturally, he became the person every team tried to avoid.

Imagine how I smiled when he called recently: "Dude, I'm gonna publish a
new book; it's about bird watching."

The long road to index futures trading
By Wang Lan
Updated: 2007-07-04 07:01

The long-awaited debut of CSI300 index futures, the mainland's first
financial futures product, is testing the patience of many market
participants, particularly institutional stock investors who would
welcome an effective hedging tool to help minimize looming risks in an
increasingly uncertain market environment.

But Shanghai-based China Financial Futures Exchange insiders said the
exchange and the government regulatory agencies insist on getting
everything right before the launch.

As a result, much time and effort is being spent on the regulations that
cover trading practices, participants' rights and obligations, risk
management and clearing facilities. Finding a shortage of experienced
financial futures traders, many prospective participants are conducting
training courses for selected staff members.

The preparation process is further complicated by the diversity of the
participants, whose specific interests must be equally protected.

"The birth of stock index futures represents the transition of China's
financial market, from the previously divided operations and supervisions
in separated markets to an integrated financial system with coordinated
efforts from all markets," said Yu Yiran, an analyst with China
International Futures (Shanghai) Co Ltd.

In the past years, a number of key rules and regulations have been
introduced to pave the way for the launch of the index futures market.
The Regulation on Futures Trading, which came into effect in April, has
effectively laid down the ground rules for all participants.

China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFEX) last week said China Securities
Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has approved the trading rules and contract
specifications for CSI300 futures. The approved rules cover trading
practices, clearing procedures, members' rights and obligations, risk
control, information management, hedging operations and investigation and
penalties for irregular trading.

The approval of the trading rules and contract specifications is widely
seen as having cleared one of the final hurdles in the long preparation
process.

The assessment of members' qualifications is expected to be the next
focus for CFFEX in the coming months. The exchange has said the approval
of the trading rules and the contract specifications was a major boost to
the preparation work, although the specific trading date for the index
futures is yet to be fixed.

But industry experts pointed out that other supplementary rules and
regulations will have to be added to form a complete legal system for the
proposed market.

Before that happens, it's difficult for the prospective market
participants, including broking firms, fund management companies,
institutional investors and clearing banks, to make any real progress in
their preparation work.

"We just can't speed things up within our organization before all the
relevant rules are put in place," said Yu.

TCSRC on June 22 said it began the process of vetting futures brokerage
companies that have applied for approval to conduct clearing business.

The securities watchdog also started the qualification assessment of
securities companies for IB, or introducing broker, business. IB enables
an approved stock brokerage companies to earn commissions by introducing
clients to futures trading through futures brokerages.

The futures market is also facing a shortage of industry professionals.
This year, the total number of those who have cleared the futures
employee qualification examination rose 26 percent from last year to
36,165, according to statistics from China Futures Association.

The frequency of such examinations has been increased to three times a
year. Before last year, it was held once or twice a year.

Many futures employees in China, despite having gained expertise in the
commodity futures markets, have very limited knowledge of the financial
futures market.

Educating investors is also a key factor in preparing for index futures.
In 2006 alone, China Futures Association hosted 37 seminars on financial
futures for individual investors.

In the past two years, the association has organized 20 lectures aimed at
institutional investors. Alongside hundreds of lectures by the
association and futures companies, investor education has also been
conducted in other forms.

The simulated trading of CSI300 futures, started in October, is widely
considered invaluable in providing a lifelike market experience to
participants.

Katie Holmes hoping to make a comeback with "Nine"

Katie Holmes

It seems that actress Katie Holmes is striving to recommence her acting
career with an impressive role in the movie version of the 1982 Broadway
musical "Nine".

The 28-year-old-wife of Tom Cruise did a singing and dancing audition
recently in the office of Oscar winner Rob Marshall who will be directing
the film, reports the New York Post.

Other stars being considered for the coveted role include Demi Moore, who
did an audition on the same day as Holmes, Renee Zellweger and Catherine
Zeta-Jones.

The film is being produced by the Weinstein Co., which obtained rights to
the project from original "Nine" book writer Arthur Kopit and composer
Maury Yeston, who will serve as co-executive producers.

Nine, set in Venice, Italy in the 1960s, premiered on Broadway in 1982
and was last seen on Broadway in 2003 in a production starring Antonio
Banderas.

US Weekly blacks out Hilton coverage

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-27 19:18

LOS ANGELES - Paris Hilton gets out of jail on Tuesday and she won't be
on the cover of US Weekly on Friday?

How, short of the Apocalypse, is this possible?

"When it came down to it, the staff and I felt what I believe a lot of
people in America are feeling. Which is just enormous Paris fatigue," US
Weekly Editor Janice Min told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

As a result, Hilton not only won't be on the cover, there won't even be a
mention of her in the magazine.

"I don't think," Min joked, "we even mention the city of Paris."

That was no easy task, she said, adding US Weekly editors had to comb
carefully through every beauty story and every fashion item to make sure
there wasn't an offhand mention of the hotel heiress somewhere.

The Associated Press put in place a similar Hilton moratorium for a week
earlier this year, just to see what would happen.

As it turned out, the celebutante didn't do much that was of interest to
anyone that week. Certainly she didn't get out of jail and get chased
across town by a pack of Hilton-hungry photographers.

Still, Min expects her magazine will do just fine without her. Hilton,
she said, has become such a mainstream media staple "that in many ways
her time with US Weekly has moved on."

So look instead for an US Weekly cover photo Friday of Tom Cruise's baby
and, inside the magazine, a dozen pages of other Hollywood babies.

Which raises the question, what would US Weekly do if Paris Hilton had a
baby?

"That will elevate her, probably, back onto the cover," Min said with a
laugh.

Chinese School - Angelina Jolie reveals her future family plans

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Angelina Jolie reveals her future family plans

(access Hollywood)
Updated: 2007-06-17 10:15

NEW YORK, NY (June 15, 2007) -- With Angelina Jolie, you never know
exactly where in the world she's going to turn up or what she's going to
say when she gets there. Last night, the actress made an appearance in
New York and the topic of conversation was family.

"I'm great," she told host Jon Stewart at the "Daily Show." "I've got a
big, crazy, happy family and I'm used to chaos and I'm very lucky."

Stewart asked her how many children she hoped to have.

"It fluctuates between 7 and 13 and 14," she said.

Stewart noted he had just two children and that was already "kicking his
ass." He told Angelina he admired her wish for a larger family.

"Four's kind of kicking our ass, but we kind of fell like Damn it! We're
up for the challenge," she said.

A few channels away, Larry King took a more direct approach.

"Would you adopt again,"the veteran CNN host asked.

"Yeah," Jolie replied. "Not tomorrow."

"How about a natural birth again?"

"Yeah, I'd consider it," she said. "Absolutely."

Access Hollywood can confirm Angelina is not pregnant, but in an effort
to protect the privacy of Angelina and Brad, Jolie's reps asked some
press, (not Access) at the New York "A Mighty Heart"premiere to sign an
agreement not to ask personal questions.

"I don't think I would consider it blocking freedom of press to say, I
don't want to say whether or not I'm pregnant right now," Jolie told King.

She also told the CNN host that a relationship is not about having fun
together it's about the desire to create the same thing in life and in
family.

"We talk about it often at home C how we're gonna raise our children . .
. We don't want them to be spoiled and we don't want them to be attached
to things, and we don't want them to, or take fame seriously, or anything
like that, we want them to be good people, like all parents."

And the Jolie-Pitts seem to have found a grounded place in an ungrounded
existence.

"When one of us is working the other is with the kids, when we shot A
Mighty Heart, he was figuring out fun things in India to do with the
children,"Angelina said.

In Angelina related news, Bochic who designed the jewelry Angelina wore
to the Golden Globes earlier this year, are auctioning off the gems with
proceeds supporting World Refugee Day.

'Ocean's Thirteen' banks $37.1 million

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-11 08:41

LOS ANGELES - Audiences anted up for the Warner Bros. caper "Ocean's
Thirteen," the third of George Clooney and Brad Pitt's casino-heist
romps, which debuted as the top flick with $37.1 million, according to
studio estimates Sunday.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the No. 1 movie the
previous two weekends, sank to second-place with $21.3 million, raising
its domestic total to $253.6 million.

Sony's "Surf's Up," an animated adventure about surfing penguins
featuring the voices of Shia LaBeouf and Jeff Bridges, debuted in
fourth-place with $18 million. That was less than half the $41.5 million
opening weekend of last fall's animated-penguin hit "Happy Feet."

"Surf's Up" earned good reviews, but audiences may have viewed it as a
retread of "Happy Feet," which finished with nearly $200 million
domestically and won the Academy Award for best animated feature.

Lionsgate's gory horror sequel "Hostel: Part II," about rich people who
pay to kill victims in grisly ways, opened at No. 6 with $8.75 million,
less than half the $19.6 million debut of last year's "Hostel."

The newcomers fell well short of the $60.1 million opening of the
animated hit "Cars" over the same weekend last year. After a big summer
start, Hollywood revenues dipped for the second-straight weekend, with
the top-12 movies taking in $133.6 million, down 9 percent from the same
weekend last year.

The three blockbusters that debuted in May "Pirates of the Caribbean,"
DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek the Third" and Sony's "Spider-Man 3" all
have trailed off with big drops in revenue after huge first weekends.

Collectively, the three movies will combine for about $1 billion in
domestic receipts. But all three will finish well below the
$400-million-plus haul each of their most-successful predecessors took in.

The latest installments on all three franchises earned mixed reviews, and
they arrived amid arguably the most-competitive summer ever for
Hollywood, with huge sequels and other big films arriving every weekend.

With "Spider-Man 3" edging toward $900 million worldwide and "At World's
End" nearing $750 million, overseas revenues have far exceeded domestic
receipts for both franchises. "Shrek the Third" is rolling out overseas
gradually.

"It's really become an opening-weekend business, but with all the
competition, in the long haul, they just don't have the legs that their
predecessors did," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office
tracker Media By Numbers. "Studios really have to rely on those worldwide
grosses to make up the difference in the long run."

An exception is Universal's comedy "Knocked Up," which held up strongly
in its second weekend with $20 million, coming in at No. 3 and raising
its domestic total to $66.2 million. Critical praise and audience word of
mouth sustained the film, which stars Katherine Heigl as a career woman
who becomes pregnant from a one-night stand with a slacker (Seth Rogen).

"Ocean's Thirteen" reunites director Steven Soderbergh with Clooney,
Pitt, Matt Damon and other cast members as the gang of thieves targets a
casino owner ( Al Pacino) who double-crossed one of their own.

The sequel debuted slightly behind the opening weekends of 2001's
"Ocean's Eleven" ($38.1 million) and 2004's "Ocean's Twelve" ($39.2
million).

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be
released Monday.

1. "Ocean's Thirteen," $37.1 million.

2. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," $21.3 million.

3. "Knocked Up," $20 million.

4. "Surf's Up," $18 million.

5. "Shrek the Third," $15.75 million.

6. "Hostel: Part II," $8.75 million.

7. "Mr. Brooks," $5 million.

8. "Spider-Man 3," $4.4 million.

9. "Waitress," $1.65 million.

10. "Disturbia," $550,000.
