Zeta-Jones: 'Acting is a hobby'

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-08-13 11:53

Welsh movie star Catherine Zeta-Jones insists acting is merely a hobby
for her - and would be able to cope if she never appeared on the big
screen again.

The Legend of Zorro actress, 37, who reportedly earned GBP4 million in
2002 for her role as Velma Kelly in Chicago, is aware her career may
falter when she turns 40.

She says, "Everything I do with my acting is a bonus. It's like a hobby.
I'm not one of those people who are so self-centred that they just have
to do it.

"I do the best I can with my work and when I hit 40, maybe things won't
change. If (my career) falters, that's fine by me. I just think it's good
I'm aware of the possibility of that."

The actress, who lives in Bermuda with her husband of six years Michael
Douglas, divides her time between the family home, holidays and her
charity work.

She adds, "I'm very philanthropic and I like investing. I love that part
of my life."

"It's something we want to begin to create this year, a family of many

Martin, who isn't married, said he doesn't expect special treatment in

Iraqi PM visits Iran seeking help to rein in violence

Updated: 2007-08-09 07:30

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday sought Iran's help in
reining in violence in his war-torn country, meeting with a top ally that
the United States accuses of fueling Iraq's turmoil by backing Shi'ite
militants.

It was the Iraqi premier's second visit to Teheran in less than a year,
coming days after US and Iranian experts held talks in Baghdad on
improving Iraq's security.

Al-Maliki and the Shi'ite and Kurdish parties that dominate his
government are closely linked to Iran, and the prime minister has
struggled to balance those ties with the United States, Teheran's top
rival in the region.

The US has stepped up its allegations that Iran is arming Shi'ite
militiamen, but the Iraqi government has taken a low-key stance without
outright backing the American claims, which Teheran denies. One al-Maliki
adviser, Sami al-Askari, said last month that the government "doesn't
rule out" Iranian arming of militants.

In Baghdad, US troops and warplanes struck militants in the Shi'ite
district of Sadr City, killing 32 suspected militants and detaining 12
others. The US military said the militants were involved in smuggling
weapons from Iran and sending militiamen to Iran for training.

Al-Maliki's visit came as officials from Iraq and its neighbors,
including Iran, held a conference in Damascus on improving Iraq's
security. At the gathering, Iraq's Deputy Foreign Minister Labib Abbawi
pressed countries to do more to stop infiltration of fighters and weapons
over their borders into iraq.

Al-Maliki met in Teheran with Iranian Vice-President Parviz Davoodi and
was to hold talks later with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's
Supreme National Security Council, according to the Iranian state news
agency IRNA.

"We want to promote economic ties and other ties that contribute to
combating terrorism and its challenges," al-Maliki said on the plane to
Iran.

He said Iraq and Iran "have joint understanding that they are keen to
solve problems and sufferings of Iraqi people. And they are both
convinced that their cooperation may lead to helping Iraq and restoring
stability."

Al-Maliki said he would also discuss and sign a number of cooperation
memorandums with Teheran. He did not elaborate.

In an apparent gesture of welcome, Iran's Payam state radio played
Arab-style belly dancing music early yesterday, a rare event in the
country, where state broadcasters shun such music because of the strict
Islamic rule.

Before arriving in Iran, al-Maliki traveled to Turkey and agreed to root
out a Kurdish rebel group from northern Iraq. He said parliament would
have the final say on efforts to halt the guerrillas' cross-border
attacks into Turkey. Iran also faces problems with its Kurdish minority
near the Iraqi border.

Turkey has threatened to stage an incursion into northern Iraq unless
Iraq or the United States cracks down on separatist Kurdish rebels. The
envisaged counterterrorism agreement is aimed at forcing Iraq to
officially commit itself to fighting the rebels.

Italian exclusively

By Nishita Mehta-Jasani (That's Shanghai)
Updated: 2007-08-08 10:10

Tucked away behind leafy foliage on Yongjia Lu, an enchanting French
villa plays host to an exclusive collection of Italian labels and
designer furs, items normally found on the Bund or at Plaza 66.

?

The first-floor showroom of Helen Tu's store EFBE (European Foreign Brand
Entrance) displays a swanky (albeit expensive) collection of fur coats,
wraps, boleros and shrugs made from chinchilla, mink, beaver and fox 鈥
each piece unique and hand-crafted with frontline designs and stylish
cuts.

?

EFBE, a member of the Purple Club for exclusive international fur
boutiques, carries two brands-Henry Fischer from Italy (an erstwhile
producer for Fendi) and Beautifully Canadian (the designer brand of the
Canadian Fur Council).

?

While animal interest groups the world over are campaigning against fur
products, Teresa Eloy, representative of the Canadian Fur Council, says
Beautifully Canadian is "very eco-friendly", noting the company's strict
standards for animal trapping and support of Canadian Indian communities
for whom this is a livelihood. Tu adds that "the demand in China is very
strong", given its resurgence in international couture. "I recently sold
one coat for RMB 1,000,000," says the spunky entrepreneur, whose furs
range in price from RMB 30,000 -1,000,000.

?

EFBE also carries a small selection of cashmere sweaters for men (from
RMB 3,000 to RMB 5,000), clothes from Portofino Piazette, swimwear and
lingerie from Parah, and children's clothing by Nouveau. Not all clothes
are readily available and you might have to place an order, but an inner
showroom features a sample collection from boutique Italian labels for
custom-made clothes which are delivered in two weeks.

?

Be that as it may, Tu, who spent several years in Italy and speaks the
language, says selling fashion is a means to an end. "Chinese people,
especially in smaller cities, have lots of money but they don't know what
to do with it," she says. "I want to be a bridge between Western and
Chinese culture, and want people to understand the importance of a great
lifestyle". Every Friday she opens her villa to customers and friends for
wine and cheese parties, with the aim of spreading her motto of qualita
'della vita-enjoying a quality life.

Chinese Pinyin - Hollywood producers to make film about HIV medics

Hollywood producers to make film about HIV medics

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-06 22:10

SOFIA?- Hollywood filmmakers hope to bring to the big screen the
eight-year ordeal of six foreign medics convicted of deliberately
injecting 460 Libyan children with the HIV virus.

Sixth Sense Productions Inc, which helped raise funding for
Oscar-nominated genocide drama "Hotel Rwanda," said the five Bulgarian
nurses and a Palestinian doctor had signed over their life rights for the
film project "The Benghazi Six."

The medics, who were sentenced to death, were freed on July 24 after the
European Union brokered a cooperation deal with Libya following years of
complex legal and political battles.

The medical workers have always maintained their innocence and said they
were tortured into confessing to intentionally starting an epidemic in
which hundreds of children were infected with the virus that causes AIDS
while working in Libya's second biggest city of Benghazi in 1998.

"The story of 'The Benghazi Six' is ... inspirational having the six
medics survive what they survived in prison throughout the years and
lived to see their freedom," said Sam Feuer, president of development and
production at Sixth Sense.

"The world needs to learn about this injustice. It's not just a Bulgarian
story, its a human story that the world will relate to and learn from,"
he told Reuters by email on Sunday.

The EU, which Bulgaria joined in January, and the United Sates had pushed
for the medic's release, pointing to evidence of torture and studies
showing the epidemic started before the nurses arrived at the Benghazi's
children hospital.

Although focused on the medics, the film will also show the tragedy of
the children infected with the virus, Feuer said. More than 50 of the
children have died.

Sixth Sense is in talks with Ann Peacock, who wrote the screenplay
adaptation of the children's fantasy blockbuster "The Chronicles of
Narnia," to write the script for the medics film, Feuer said. The company
is also interviewing directors.

"Hollywood stars will star in it. Our job is to develop the best script
possible that will attract them," said Feuer.

Sixth Sense producers will come to Sofia to meet the medics and their
families once the company lines up a screenwriter.

The medics said they were glad their ordeal might be shown one day on the
big screen.

"The world will see the truth. The world must see the truth. Such a case
doesn't happen every day," said Dr Zdravko Georgiev, husband of one of
the nurses. He was acquitted in the HIV case in 2004, but not allowed to
leave the country until last month.

The Bulgarian nurses and Georgiev left the relatively poor Balkan country
in the late 1990s to work in Libya where medical workers' salaries were
higher. Nineteen Bulgarian medics were detained in early 1999 and 13 were
later released.

Western scientists have said Libya's inefficient health-care system was
the real culprit for the HIV infection.

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov pardoned the nurses and the
Palestinian doctor, who recently took Bulgarian citizenship, after they
arrived in Sofia two weeks ago.

The medics return to Bulgaria closed what Libya's critics called a human
rights scandal and advanced the long-isolated north African country's
efforts to normalize ties with the West.

Bruce Lee licence plate sells for 5,100 dollars

HONG KONG (AFP) - A Bruce Lee fan has splashed out 40,000 Hong Kong
dollars (5,100 US dollars) on a car licence plate bearing the name of the
legendary martial arts film star, local media reported Sunday.

The "BRUCELEE" licence plate was sold at an auction by the Hong Kong
transport department, the Sunday Morning Post reported.

The bidder said he would have paid up to one million Hong Kong dollars
for the plate, but would consult with Lee's widow before deciding what to
do with it, according to the report.

"When I studied in Britain, I saw that foreigners only knew Bruce Lee and
chairman Mao Zedong," the man, identified only as Mr Wong, said after
Saturday's auction.

"Bruce Lee was great and he contributed a lot to China. He has influenced
people from a few generations and his influence can still be felt today."

Lee was born in the United States but his fame grew from Hong Kong where
he made movies including "Fist of Fury" on his way to worldwide
superstardom.

The actor, who died at the age of 32 on July 20, 1973, helped to
popularise martial arts in the West and opened the door to Hollywood fame
for other Asian stars such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Gay couple set for 'Desperate Housewives'

Updated: 2007-08-01 16:11

Desperate Housewives writer and creator Marc Cherry has revealed his
plans to introduce a gay couple to Wisteria Lane in season four.

Cherry - who will use his own life experiences as a basis for the plot -
told afterelton.com: "We're going to have the first male desperate
housewives.

"They will move into the old Applewhite house, and one of the gay men
will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with [Susan Mayer]," he
continued.

"Susan wants to be so politically correct and show how open-minded she
is, that she puts her foot in her mouth instantly and it goes downhill
from there. I'm basing it a little bit on my relationship with my
neighbours."

He added: "We've just started writing the episodes, so I probably won't
start casting for another few weeks."

Production has already begun on the fourth season of the hit ABC drama
and is due to kick off its 23-episode run in the US on Sunday, September
30.

Chinese Pinyin - Old steel mill renewed

? ?

CITYLIFE / Weekend & Holiday

Old steel mill renewed

By Zhang Qian
Updated: 2007-07-31 11:48

Redtown is known for its red-brick Shanghai Sculpture Space, big
exhibitions and events, but it is getting livelier with new artists' and
designers' studios, restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs.

?

The Shanghai No. 10 Steel Factory was once the industrial pride of the
city, and now its red-brick No. 7 workshop is the Redtown cultural
center, a magnet for those interested in art, entertainment, dining,
clubbing or a cup of tea.

?

Redtown is known for its permanent Sculpture Space, which opened in
November 2005. And numerous art and fashion exhibitions and celebrations,
and it is getting livelier, more personal and welcoming. It's not just a
place for big events, but it's getting to be a creative hub in the former
French Concession area.

?

Shanghai has around 70 such creative spaces, most in old industrial
areas, but Redtown is one of the largest and the best designed.

?

"Culture is important to a city, and its industrial legacy is also part
of the culture," says Zheng Peiguang, CEO of Redtown Culture Development
Co, the man who saved and developed Redtown. He has been devoted to
protecting historical buildings since 2000.

?

"My goal is to build an international culture community, not simply a
sculpture space," says Zheng, "and this community should be characterized
as cultural and open, not only cherished by artists, but also appreciated
by common people."

?

Zheng has rented other factory buildings nearby to complete his dream
community, Redtown. Now more than 45 companies have rented space,
including bars, tea houses, restaurants, design and artistic/creation
offices.

?

"All the design and creation groups here are the best in their fields,
says Zheng. "I want to help them to succeed. I even offer zero-rent
initially to struggling companies with potential."

?

One of those talented newcomers is designer Yang Mingjie, who undertakes
projects for Zheng and Redtown in exchange for space.

?

"This was the romantic French Concession area in the early 20th century,
the energetic steel works in mid-20th century, and now it is the
fashionable modern art center," says Yang. "The streets haven't changed
much, but dwellers changed greatly. Sometimes I can't help imaging the
steel workers doing their jobs energetically just where I sit."

?

Other design studios include Leissie Design Studio from Italy, Da She
Architecture, which was honored for best building by the American
magazine Business Week, and Jamy Yang Associates Design, which cooperated
with Siemens, and Shanghai Expo in products design.

?

Restaurants include BECA that serves French cuisine; tea houses include
Jing Ran Xuan Tea House; bars include the Swiss-run Fan Town bar.

?

The two nightclubs are CICI Club, spinning house, hip-hop, breaks, chill
out, and lounge, and Children's Club.

?

Redtown goes back to 1956, founding of the Shanghai No. 10 Steel Factory,
which produced 400,000 tons of cold- and hot-rolled steel strips
annually. But in 1989 the city ordered factories to move out of the
downtown so that the area could be modernized and developed more
fashionably.

?

Converting unused factories into creative space is not unusual. Take a
look at Soho in New York, the South Bank of the Thames in London, Grange
Island in Vancouver. All of them used to be industrial areas, now they
are art centers, like Redtown, which is just beginning.

?

Zheng was concerned about the old steel works and other buildings years
ago, but the policies and regulations at the time made it impossible for
him to develop them. He watched as many buildings were pulled down and
replaced by construction materials markets, then a garbage dump.

?

"I was startled when I saw the private museums and creative communities
in Melbourne and Sydney in 2005, they were so beautiful," says Zheng. "I
told myself I have to go back and do something with the Shanghai No. 10
Steel Factory."

?

Zheng revisited the steel mill when he returned but was again shocked to
see that only the No. 7 workshop remained. There was only a huge garbage
dump in the front.

?

Yet again, Zheng was not allowed to rent the workshop as he was told that
the government already had plans for the structure.

?

"How did I finally get the building?" asks Zheng. "I think it was fate
that brought us together."

?

Two days after Zheng was rejected, he met an official of the Bureau of
Urban Planning of Changning District. He asked Zheng whether he was
interested in building a sculpture center - exactly on the site of the
No. 7 workshop of the Shanghai No. 10 Steel Factory.

?

"You can imagine how I felt at that moment," says Zheng. "Though there
were already seven companies bidding for the project, I applied for it,
too. I was confident about myself and my group. I was sure I would get
it."

?

After six months' evaluation and revision, Zheng's plan was selected. It
only took four months to complete the project.

?

Shanghai Sculpture Space opened on November 11, 2005, with the "Sculpture
of a Century" Exhibition, which was widely praised.

breakfast excursions have definitely helped ease her homesickness. "Last
month, we traveled all the way to the mountains near the Great Wall to
have breakfast. It was one of the best trips I've had sin my arrival."
INN Volunteer Rebecca Malzacher said June was the first time the group
hosted a "mystery brekkie." Given no informationbout the location, they
were led by Susan Trimble, tour guide of the day, to Valley View Resort
in the country-side for breakfast. "In September, we are planning a
surprise called a 'Surprise brekki!'" Malzacher said.

?

We're a communit

?

As an expat-only club, INN members are all foreign passport holders.

?

"Our community has a broad age range, you see newly weds in their
twenties, as well as retired couples in their sventies," Grant said. She
explained that events organized by INN are not only a means for new
members to make friends, but a way for older members to expand their
social network. "Half of the people who attend brekkie and monthly
meetings aren't newcomers: some women have lived here for more than two
years, and [in that time] their friends might have left. They need
opportunities to make new friends," she said. With the expat-scene in
Beijing growing faster than ever, the need for socializing has exploded.
In particular, Grant hopes to accommodate the needs of busy husbands and
working women. "It occurred to us that, so far, our activites like
'coffee mornings' and 'brekkies' were restricted to stay-at-home wives,"
she said. "We began 'cocktail nights' two months ago at theHotel and
Kerry Center to try including husbands and working women in our events."

Another popular but lighter housewife gathering, "Coffee Mornings," was
set up for Shun Yi only. Grant said that as more volunteers helped, the
community was able to set up a second "coffee morning" point in Sanlitun
five months ago.

?

She said that INN activities rely intensively on volunteer support, and
is disappointed that they have not reached Haidian. "We can only do as
much as volunteers are willing t take the time and effort," she said.

Chinese Character - Hot summer party is on

? ?

CITYLIFE / what's on

Hot summer party is on

(smartshanghai.com)
Updated: 2007-07-27 11:33

The thermostat is steadily rising, as are the pant legs of taxi drivers
across the city. Summer has arrived. My landlord too, jabbering away in
my doorway, shirt propped up over his belly, sweat steaming down his
brow, placated only by a cold Tsingtao, is a tell-tale sign of summer.
The old man standing under the Ya'an expressway yesterday afternoon,
however, is proof positive-clad as he was only in a pair of beleaguered
tighty whiteys and shower sandals-that the onslaught of the Shanghai
summer is officially upon us.

And so it is time to get in the spirit of the season. Pool parties.
Weekend trips. Tan lines. Calling in late for work. Outdoor concerts.
Sunburns. Trips to the beach. Patio drunks. Leaving work early. Daytime
drunks. Calling in sick for work and drink with lots of fruit around the
rim of the glass.

One club that's embracing the spirit of the summer is Fantown, which is
hosting a Tropical Beach Party this Friday. Sponsored by ASC Sparkling
Wine, the club is actually importing real sand to create a beach
atmosphere. Summer outfits are encouraged (actually "hot beach wear" is
encouraged) and the first 50 people on the beach get free Spanish summer
hats.

One of Shanghai's newer clubs, Fantown is located in Redtown, the heart
of the Shanghai Sculpture Space. A more arty New Factories, Redtown is a
surreal place intermixing clubs, restaurants, cafes, creative offices,
galleries and public art. Fantown itself has literally been worked into
the landscape: the sculpture lawn just outside the club continues up over
the roof of the club. By day the club sits in an artsy area surrounded by
a museum and sculpture lawn, boutique cafes and artists' studios, as well
as creative office spaces. By night the club sits at the center of a
budding club and bar district.

The interior design of Fantown was created by events/design agency Lime
388. Because of its large size, the club is divided into three parts. For
the club area, part one, Lime designed high chairs for parties of 3-4
with footrest tables with lights inside. For the Lounge area, part two,
each lounge area contains red contemporary style sofas good for 6-12
people; these lounge areas are then divided by irregular walls. For the
VIP rooms (upstairs), part three, there is one Gold Room and one Pink
Room. The Gold Room is surrounded by gold walls with little glimmering
lights; the walls, chairs, ceiling lights are all gold. The other VIP
room, the pink room, has a circular sofa that is totally pink with pink
lighting as well.

So how is Fantown different from other clubs? Karen from Lime 388
explains, "like most clubs, Fantown has special guest DJs and special
parties like the hip-hop battle or the Fourth of July party. But, it also
offers options for low-key guests who simply want to enjoy a beer after
work during Happy Hour or card players who want to hang out and talk to
friends on Casino Nights."

Tropical Beach Party

Potter magic: Book breaks sales records

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-23 08:48

Sarah Murrell, left, of Chandler, Ariz., hands out copies of 'Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows,' at the Changing Hands Bookstore
Saturday, July 21, 2007 in Tempe, Ariz.[AP]

It is the richest going-away party in history.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final volume of
J.K. Rowling's all-conquering fantasy series, sold a mountainous 8.3
million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in the United States,
according to Scholastic Inc.

No other book, not even any of the six previous Potters, has been so
desired, so quickly. "Deathly Hallows" averaged more than 300,000 copies
in sales per hour 鈥 more than 5,000 a minute. The $34.99 book, even
allowing for discounts, generated far more revenue than the opening
weekend of the latest Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix," which came out July 10.

"The excitement, anticipation, and just plain hysteria that came over the
entire country this weekend was a bit like the Beatles' first visit to
the U.S.," Scholastic president Lisa Holton said in a statement Sunday.

"This weekend kids and adults alike are sitting on buses, in the park, on
airplanes and in restaurants reading 'Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows.' The conversations the readers have been waiting to have for 10
years have just begun."

The numbers are astonishing, but not shocking. "Deathly Hallows" was
designed to break records, released Saturday with a first printing of 12
million in the U.S. alone, although Scholastic spokeswoman Kyle Good
acknowledged that some stores already were out of copies.

"Our distribution strategy was clearly right on target in order to sell
8.3 million copies in 24 hours," she told The Associated Press. "We are
working with retailers to move additional copies to the places they are
needed most in the coming days and weeks."

The book's British publisher, Bloomsbury, expects to announce sales
figures Monday.

Earlier Sunday, Borders Group Inc. reported that "Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows" sold 1.2 million copies worldwide in its first day, the
biggest single-day number ever for the superstore chain. According to
Borders, the previous Potter, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,"
sold 850,000 copies on its first day of release in 2005.

Both Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble announced that pre-orders exceeded 1
million. In a truly Beatles-esque moment, seven of the top best sellers
on Amazon were Potter-related Sunday, including the audio CD of "Deathly
Hallows" and a box set of all seven Potters coming out in September.

"Deathly Hallows" was so popular that Hollywood studio Warner Bros.
acknowledged it took away business from "Harry Potter and the Order of
the Phoenix," the fifth Potter movie, because fans were too busy.

"They wanted to get that book Saturday, lock themselves in the house and
read it, because they didn't want their other friends by Monday telling
them who made it and who didn't," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' head of
distribution.

Reviews for "Deathly Hallows" have been almost universally ecstatic, and
reader enthusiasm apparently intact despite, prerelease "spoilers" that
proliferated on the Internet.

"The book was fascinating, and I think I'll have to read it through at
least once more before I get the full scope of it 鈥 but I thought it
had some of her best, most action-packed, funniest moments in it," says
Melissa Anelli, Webmaster for the Potter fan site
http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org, who said she finished the 759-page
book Saturday.

"When I closed the book I was overjoyed and devastated 鈥 overjoyed at
the story, and the way it had played out, but devastated that the tale
was complete," she said. "It did feel like a bereavement, like it was
saying farewell to a long-trusted friend."

Last week, some surprised and lucky readers received early deliveries of
their Potters, thanks to a glitch by online retailer DeepDiscount.com.
Over the weekend, some unfortunate readers complained that their books
from Amazon.com had not arrived on Saturday, as promised. Amazon.com
spokesman Sean Sundwall would not confirm or deny reports of delays but
said Sunday that anyone who did not receive it on time would
automatically be refunded the cost of the $34.99 book, which Amazon sold
for $17.99.

Potter fan Anna Todd, a film student at the State University of New
York's Purchase campus, picked up her book in person at midnight Saturday
at the Barnes & Noble in Manhattan's Union Square. Taking naps off and
on, she was finished within 24 hours.

"J.K. Rowling does not disappoint; I thought she did brilliantly. It was
terrifying; sometimes I was scared to keep reading on. I cried buckets,"
said Todd, 20, who lamented that "never again will I stay up all night
reading a new Harry Potter book, or go to its midnight release party, or
invent wild theories about Harry being the Heir of Gryffindor."

"That's it," she said. "It's all over. I feel like I just said goodbye
forever to my oldest, dearest friend. All I can do is re-read, and in the
future when I have children, I'll get to share these books with them. I
look forward to that day."

HSK - Summer Davos to put Dalian on business map

Summer Davos to put Dalian on business map

Updated: 2007-08-01 06:40

Dalian, a coastal city in Northeast China's Liaoning Province, is poised
for a place on the world business map this summer when it hosts the
Inaugural Annual Meeting of the New Champions, known as the "Summer
Davos". The meeting, organized by the World Economic Forum and the
Chinese government, is expected to offer a new platform for interaction
and collaboration between business leaders, technology pioneers and
senior officials from different countries. Xia Deren, mayor of Dalian,
spoke with China Daily reporter Wang Xu about the concept of New
Champions and Dalian's preparation for the Summer Davos.

Q: What's the difference between the "Summer Davos" and the winter one?

A: The World Economic Forum held in Davos of Switzerland draws leaders
from business, government and international institutions each year to
exchange opinions and ideas. The themes of the event are usually the
hottest economic and political topics of the year.

Now the world economy has entered a phase of development, as more and
more new companies are emerging and reshaping the landscape of the
business world. The Summer Davos, titled Annual Meeting of the New
Champions, is expected to provide an opportunity for these new champions
to exchange opinions on the latest issues of the world, such as energy,
education, environment and technology.

The "new champions", as we call them, are a new generation of companies
that will fundamentally change the global competitive landscape. They
typically have an annual turnover between $2 billion and $4 billion, and
no less than 15 percent year-on-year growth.

Q: Who are the participants in the Summer Davos and what's the main
agenda?

A: The Summer Davos will be held on September 6 to 8 in Dalian. During
the three-day event, there will be a "global young leaders' conference",
which will invite 300 young political, scientific and cultural leaders to
discuss issues such as leadership and social responsibility.

Meanwhile, three informal ministerial summits and a public health summit
will allow participants to exchange opinions on the main obstacles of
sustainable growth in the world.

At the same time, participants will also attend a total of 60 sessions
covering the major topics of the global economic growth such as corporate
governance, finance, information, capital, service and human resources.

So far, the World Economic Forum has invited the leaders from 24
countries and 120 ministers to attend the Summer Davos. We plan to invite
2,000 formal representatives, including CEOs from Fortune 1,000
companies, mayors from the most competitive cities in the world and
national leaders from the fastest-growing countries.

For the time being, there are more than 600 representatives registered
for the forum, including Craig Barrett, chairman of the board of Intel
Corporation, and Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health
Organization.

Q: There were actually several cities in China keen to hold the Summer
Davos. How did Dalian win the bid?

A: First, Dalian is an important port, industrial, trade and tourism city
in northern China and has become the largest destination for foreign
investment in Northeast China.

Dalian has been famous for its beautiful coastal view and its
environment. At the same time, Dalian has excellent hospitality
facilities; with seven five-star and 21 four-star hotels. There will be
more than 1,000 volunteers for the event, who can speak English,
Japanese, Korean and other languages.

Q: How about local enterprises' response to the Summer Davos?

A: Domestic companies have been quite interested in attending the event.
As we have mentioned, a great deal of multinational companies will gather
in Dalian at that time, and the meeting is a great platform for any
business cooperation.

There will be more than 60 sessions during the Summer Davos. Some of the
topics such as corporate governance and management could offer great
insights for improving companies' competitiveness. The organizer of the
World Economic Forum has visited more than 10 cities in China, including
Qingdao, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. A number of Chinese Fortune 500
companies, such as Sinopec, CNOOC and China Mobile, will be coming to the
event.

Q: How will Dalian present itself to the world during the Summer Davos?

A: There will be more than 8,000 guests coming to Dalian during the
Summer Davos. I am sure they will be impressed by the beautiful city. At
the same time, more than 1,000 domestic and foreign reporters will also
come to report the event, which will help audience around the world know
more about the city.

Meanwhile, we will organize a series of salons and forums to promote
face-to-face exchanges between Dalian and multinational companies, trying
to introduce them to Dalian's outstanding investment environment.

Gardening on your balcony

(Beijing Today)
Updated: 2007-07-19 11:35

All it takes to introduce a breath of the outdoors into your house is a
balcony. Planting vegetables on the balcony is trendy among urbanites.
Regardless of attitudes towards planting vegetables on the balcony, it
demonstrates a desire for a slower pace of life amidst today's urban rush.

"The life of a farmer, springtime and a patch of grass are my dreams,"
reads a real estate sign in the Beijing subway. It is difficult to make
out the writing with the endless stream of people passing in front of it
as they board and exit.

Live healthier

Urban residents have few opportunities to eat fresh vegetables every day.
They usually go to the market and buy food to get them through the week.
If they plant vegetables themselves, they could eat fresh ones at any
time. Planting on your own is also a great way to skirt the chemical
problems of market-grown vegetables.

Wang Xueyan, as part of Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS),
plants tomatoes and cucumbers on her balcony."There are only two ways for
humans to connect with the environment: one is to protect the
environment, and the other one is to destroy it," she said."Planting
vegetables on the balcony is a win-win activity, both for the environment
and for ourselves," she explains, "It can make our balcony greener, and
contribute to a nicer city landscape. It also provides a source of fresh
green food for our daily lives.""It is a healthy habit to have, and I
think it will only become more popular among Beijng's urbanites," she
added

Living the dream

Yu Jun's wife used to love to plant flowers and plants on their balcony,
but she was always disappointed with the results. "The kafir lilies never
flowered on our balcony, and neither did the cacnea," he husband said.

Last year, they found vines with yellow flowers wrapped around one of
their pots. The vines eventually bore fruit, which turned out to be
balsam pears. His wife picked up pears and made a cold dish. "It was
fabulous. Since then, my wife has been fascinated with planting
vegetables on the balcony," he said. His wife bought some leek seeds
early this year and planted them in a garden pot. "In the beinning, she
used to get up and check how her leeks were doing every morning. In only
half a month, they had shot up 20 centimeters. She has a lot of fun, and
usually isn't disappointed with the results."Today, we have planted five
pots of leeks. We can eat fresh leeks almost every day," he said.

Chinese Mandarin - Jazz and love in concert

CITYLIFE / Weekend & Holiday

Jazz and love in concert

By Zhang Qian (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-13 14:10

Old Shanghai was known for its jazz and romance, and two Australian jazz
artists-who also are in love - are sharing their music and their
engagement party with the people of the city that still is known for its
jazz.

"Love in Shanghai," a jazz concert by singer Jacki Cooper and drummer
John Morrison, will be staged on Sunday at the Shanghai Oriental Art
Center. They will cooperate with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Jazz
Band. It will be hosted by Lin Dongfu, celebrity owner of the House of
Blues and Jazz.

Cooper and Morrison consider the concert their engagement party.

"When I asked Jacki, 'Will you marry me?' she said, 'Then you have to get
me a special wedding dress in Shanghai.' That's why we are here, and we
have already got the dress," says Morrison.

Cooper and Morrison, both from Sydney, met when they cooperated in a
concert three years ago. They shared more than their passion for jazz.

Cooper has performed with jazz greats Mark Murphy, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis
Nash, John Clayton, Madeline Eastman and Jim Cullum.

"Jazz makes people feel happy. The rhythm makes people want to dance,"
says Morrison. "If a two-year-old kid hears jazz, without knowing what
kind of music it is, he will just move spontaneously. When playing jazz,
we feel ourselves just like a carefree child."

Cooper agrees that if they don't play jazz for a few days, they will feel
something is missing.

Cooperating with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Jazz Band is an exciting
prospect. As a jazz educator, Morrison always feels it his responsibility
to pass on his experiences. This year he set up the Swing City Jazz Club
in Sydney and is dedicated to promoting jazz talent.

Together with his younger brother, renowned trumpeter James Morrison, he
has toured widely, performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreaux
Jazz Festival and the Royal Albert Hall.

"Jazz is not what can be simply learned from the blackboard or books," he
says. "I know that there's good jazz music in Shanghai and I'm looking
forward to the cooperation. I can experience Chinese traditional culture,
and they can learn from my experience."

The couple has prepared two Chinese songs for the concert, "Jasmine
Flower" and "Sweet Honey."

"Jazz is a universal language rather than just a style," says Lin.
"Shanghai can't be a perfect international big city without this
language."

Tom Cruise to receive career honor

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-07-12 09:34

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is set to be honored at New York City's Museum of the Moving
Image (MOMI) in November.

The Minority Report star, 45, follows in the footsteps of former honorees
Sidney Lumet, Robert De Niro, Richard Gere, Al Pacino, Sidney Poitier,
Julia Roberts and James Stewart.

MOMI director Rochelle Slovin said they chose Cruise for his outstanding
27-year film career, which started with Endless Love in 1981.

Slovin says, "Tom Cruise is one of the premier American actors of his
generation. Working with the great directors of our time—(including)
Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese,
Steven Spielberg and now Robert Redford--Cruise has given us indelible
characters and performances."

Chinese School - Go with the flow

? ?

CITYLIFE / Bars & Cafes

Go with the flow

By Erik Nilsson (Beijing Weekend)
Updated: 2007-07-09 13:45

Seasoned hutong hounds would agree that Shuiguiqi courts the finest
features of Beijing's siheyuan. Its name comes from an ancient poem,
which translates as "water takes the shape of its container". Management
says this line of prose best spells out the flow of the place.

Upon entering this antiquated establishment, punters pass through a
virtual garden of potted plants to reach the courtyard.

Here flows one of the most unique fountains among those flooding the
Gulou area's proliferation of hutong hideaways. A bamboo spout drains
into an L-shaped frame molded of concrete and painted with floral
flourishes. Its basin is brimming with swimming coy and jagged stones.
The fountain flows in the shadow of an old tree, which shades the
courtyard during the day. Across the yard, vines twine interlacing
tendrils around a rough-hewn atrium.

Traditional bric-a-brac lines the racks and shelves of the rooms on the
first floor. Couches, wooden benches and starburst-backed chairs offer
places for punters to plop down and drink up.

Testifying to the fact that the establishment attracts a chiefly Chinese
clientele, traditional tea sets serve as centerpieces of most tabletops.
Lighting is provided by unique cubic, paper lamps adorned with floral
patterns and wire-framed orbs wrapped in rope.

A narrow, rickety staircase leads to a rooftop terrace. This seating area
is bordered by rustling treetops on one side and the neighboring
restaurant's often-packed pavilion on the other. A barrier fashioned from
stacked wuyanr-styled shingles fences in the collection of wicker and
wooden furniture - including a swinging chair and wooden recliners. And
seating here edges against rooftops, so boozers can rest their backs
against the wuyanr-styled eaves as they toss back tipple.

Beers range from 15-30 yuan, while cocktails range from 35-40. The
establishment serves manically minty mojitos and particularly piquant
daiquiris. Hutong hunters would agree, the place is a trophy find among
Beijing's watering holes.
